Top 10 Posts of 2012

Happy New Year's Eve to you all!! I hope you had a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year! I'm celebrating today by sharing my top 10 posts of 2012 (according to Google Analytics). Thank you all for making this a wonderful year for Taking Time to Create! I had a little party with every comment and seeing my page views increase over the past few months. It was even a little exciting (at first anyway) to have spammers commenting, because that meant that someone or something was finding my little blog.

I hope you'll continue to join me in 2013!

Make Your Own Kindle Cases {Christmas Gift Idea}

My husband and I bought Kindles for each other this year, but we just couldn't spend what can sometimes be $30+ for a case. I decided I'd make them myself and was thrilled when I found this post from Whipstitch. The really awesome thing? You may already have all that you need to make these cases which would make this project FREE! Oh, and wouldn't these make a great Christmas gift?

The cases are just as good, if not better, than one you can buy. The corner pockets hold your Kindle in place as you read while the elastic holds the front cover back:
When you're not reading, you can slip your Kindle into the handy dandy pocket for more secure storage...
...and close the front cover with the elastic, so it won't slip out.
They're so easy to make that I was able to make two in no time!

You basically need a fat quarter worth of fabric, some interfacing, batting, and elastic. If you're missing a few of those supplies like I was, here are some substitutions you can try: fabric for interfacing, fleece for batting, and and elastic hair band (they're like a giant pony tail holder) for the elastic piece. One tip: if you're using fabric for interfacing, don't interface the fabric pieces for the corner pockets (the little triangles).  They'll be pretty thick if you do. Head on over to "Whipstitch" for the tutorial if you'd like to make one!

Rockin' Baby Burp Cloths

I saw this tutorial over at Made and decided that burp cloths would be the perfect thing to make with some fabric remnants I picked up at JoAnn's. I didn't exactly follow the tutorial though, so I'll give you a little run through. It's basically just sewing a couple pieces of fabric together...super easy. :-)

I was working with smaller pieces of flannel, so I made them a bit smaller. For the back, I had a weird shaped piece of fabric, so I cut two pieces of the flannel measuring 7.25x10.5 inches and sewed them together giving me one piece measuring 10.5x14 inches.

I cut my top piece to match the size of this combined piece 10.5x14 inches.
This is where I followed Dana's instructions. Stack the pieces so the right sides face each other and sew around three sides of the two pieces. Trim the corners and turn them inside out. Tuck the raw edges of the open end inward and sew around all the edges about 1/4 inch away from the edge. I ironed the edges inward and pinned the open end shut before I started sewing.

TIP: To ensure that your corners line up, start sewing the edges toward the middle of one of the edges rather than at the corner. I thing it's easier to line up the joining seams once you get all the way around.

Since my cloths were a little smaller than those in the tutorial, I decided to just have them fold in half where the seam to the back piece was. So, I just sewed a seam along that back piece seam to help create the fold.

That fabric is so cute and rockin'!

Diaper & Wet Wipes "Wallet"

My little guy goes into the "nursery" at church, and we usually give them his diaper bag (just in case). They only ever need diapers and wipes, though, so it seems like overkill to give them the whole bag. I've seen diaper and wipes holders, but they were more than I wanted to spend, and I figured I could make something.

Then I got to thinking about my Gift Card Holder{Wallet}. A bigger version of that would work perfectly! There'll be a pocket for diapers and a pocket for the wipes. Awesome!

So, I followed the tutorial from My So Called Green Life again, but this time I used these measurements:

  • 3 pieces measuring 15.5x10.5 inches (1 was for the interfacing, so you could do that in a different fabric or an actual interfacing).
  • 1 piece measuring 15.5x7.5 inches
In one of the first steps in the original tutorial you are supposed to fold over 1/4 of an inch and then 1/4 inch again to finish off the edge of the pocket, but I did 1/2 and inch and then 1/2 an inch. It was a little easier than folding over 1/4 inch.

I sewed three different versions. Once I got going on these, they were so easy to make!
In the first version, I used a button closure. I got the button over a little too far, but it works. :-)
The next version didn't have any closure at all. It's going to be in my husband's truck, so it won't be moving around too much. We'll see how it works...I can always add a closure later.
The last one uses a band closure. I used what was essentially a large pony tail holder (or headband) to create this closure.
Now the diapers and wipes have a nice new snugly place to stay.

Headbands From T-Shirts

I should have been cleaning this morning, but instead I've been sewing! Oh well, the mess will still be there when I'm done writing this post. :-)

You may have seen these Headbands over at Make It And Love It a while back. I've been wanting to make some and finally sat down yesterday and made a couple. They were super easy and quick!

It's going to be so nice to have something to hold m hair out of my face that will actually stay on my head. Store bought headbands just don't cut it for me (they're usually too small).

If you'd like to make your own, you should definitely check out Ashley's tutorial. Since she came up with it AND did such a great job, I'm not going to repeat the process here. it just involves a little sewing and some braiding.

I also did a thinner headband than the one above and decided to try dyeing it. I didn't have an cloth dye on hand, so I Googled a bit and found instructions for dyeing cloth with food coloring. Hmmm...interesting. I decided to give it a try, and here's how it turned out.
It's almost what I was going for. I was going for a grey, so it's not bad. I didn't have quite enough red for the mixture, so it's not quite right. I think if I trying dyeing cloth with food coloring again, I won't try to mix a color like black/grey. I'll just go with a basic color like blue or green. Not a bad experiment though!

Magnetic Pin Jar

Good morning and Happy Thursday! That means it's almost Friday. We're going on a little adventure this weekend, so I'm really excited for the week to come to a close. Today, I have a really simple project for you. I think it seriously took me 10 minutes.

My Inspiration

Source: momtastic.com via Erin on Pinterest

I've been seeing jars like the one above all over the place. Some are used as a "mini sewing kit" and others are used to hold those pesky straight pins.

I don't know about you, but I tend to get them all over the place when I'm sewing. I've got a little guy who doesn't always like to wear shoes (not to mention that I don't really like wearing them either), so straight pins on the floor is a recipe for disaster. I wanted something that would  help me keep those little pins in one place.

I had it on my list to make a pin cushion like the one above, but I was going to use the jar to hold the pins rather than make a mini sewing kit. But then it hit me! I had seen another post here for a magnetic pin dish. How great would it be to combine the two? So I grabbed a few things, and came up with the magnetic pin jar.

It works great! There's a place to hold all those pins, and the top is magnetic. So while you're sewing, you can just set the pins on the lid and they won't slip off!

Want to make your own? Here's what you'll need:

A scrap of fabric

 Straight pins
A small jar
A strong magnet or a few regular magnets
Glue (I used my hot glue gun)
Scissors

Sorry, I don't have pictures to go along with the directions. I made it so quickly that I didn't think to take any! It's pretty easy, though, so I think you can probably follow along.

Step 1: Cut your fabric so that it will cover your jar lid. At first I was going to tuck mine under the lid but I ended up just letting it hang down (I wasn't sure if it would hinder the lid from screwing onto the jar). If your fabric will fray easily, you may want to zig zag the edges before proceeding to the next step.

Step 2: Glue your fabric onto the lid. I glued my fabric onto the sides of the lid.

Step 3: Attach your magnet(s) If you're just using one strong magnet, you probably don't need to glue it. I didn't glue mine. If you're using a few regular magnets, you may want to fasten them with hot glue, so they don't push each other around.

Step 4: Add your straight pins!

If you used a strong magnet, be aware that the pins are probably going to be attracted to the magnet in the jar. You can see my pins stuck to the magnet on the underside of the jar. I imagine this may probably happen with regular magnets too, but probably not as easily. I you don't want them to do this you may try a taller jar, so there's more space in between the magnet(s) and the pins.

It's been very handy, and I haven't been finding pins laying around. A very good thing. :-)

Gift Card Holder {Wallet}

Last week, I made the Handmade Gift Bag and this little gift card holder was one of the items I put in it. I followed this tutorial from Kellie at My So Called Green Life... She does a great job explaining everything, so if you'd like to make one of these little gems, head on over to her blog. :-)

Here's a full shot of the inside:
There is room for two cards, but since I was using it to give just one gift card, I made a little printable "Happy Birthday" Card to go in the other side. If you'd like, you can right click on the image to save it to your computer and print it.

I did want to add a covered button to the front, so I followed this tutorial from Ashley at Make It And Love It to create one.

It was easy, turned out great, and was so much better than just putting the gift card in a card!
